reflection

The final module of FoDR was the culmination of the skills I had learned across the year. The task itself was rooted in abstraction, and hence some of the greatest difficulties in this module were purely conceptual. After spending a great deal of time brainstorming, I decided that the motif of the Penrose staircase was both relevant and striking in representing my city: Melania.

I was pleased at the outcome of my perspectives – both of which managed to feed into my desired narrative for the city while remaining compositionally interesting. However, the overall composition of my isometric ended up a little muddled, and elements should have sought to emphasize the Penrose staircase form more intently.

I was invited to reflect on the purpose of notation in design and artistic disciplines. An important point that I took away from the lectures, readings and the project itself is that notation has the potential to capture a great deal of complexity, and for unfamiliar situations, the use of abstracted notation – such as that in M4 – may be necessary for representation.
